FAQ

만나이 (international age) starts at 0 at birth and increases by 1 each birthday. 세는나이 (traditional Korean age) starts at 1 at birth and increases by 1 every January 1st. Since June 2023, Korea legally uses 만나이 as the standard.
연나이 is calculated by subtracting the birth year from the current year, regardless of birthday. Everyone born in the same year has the same 연나이. It is mainly used for school enrollment and military conscription criteria.
Since June 2023, 만나이 (international age) is the legal and administrative standard in Korea. However, some laws like the Military Service Act (연나이) and Youth Protection Act (under 19 in 연나이) still use separate standards.
In Korea, those born in January or February are traditionally placed in the same school year as those born the previous year, called '빠른 생일.' For example, someone born February 2000 is in the same grade as those born in 1999. This school placement system remains even after the 만나이 unification.
Since June 28, 2023, 만나이 is the standard for laws, contracts, and official documents. Age requirements for alcohol and tobacco purchases, senior discounts, etc. all changed to 만나이, effectively making people 1–2 years younger by legal standards.
This calculator works with the Gregorian (solar) calendar. If your birthday is in the lunar calendar, please convert it to the solar calendar first. You can search for 'lunar to solar date converter' online.
Elementary school enrollment is for children who turn 6 years old (만나이) by March 1st of that year. For example, children born between March 2, 2020 and March 1, 2021 would start school in March 2027.
